An original mixed media painting by Nathalie Kalbach, signed in the lower right.

The house of worship on Bergen Ave was initially erected as a synagogue by the Congregation of Agudath Shalom in the early 1910s. Since 1980, it has been home to the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. When I moved to Jersey City a decade ago, I noticed that several former synagogues had transformed into different houses of worship. These buildings make me ponder the changes in a city's landscape and its history.

Houses of worship are often built with love, resources, and contributions from congregation members. Hidden cornerstones or signs remind of a  once-thriving Jewish community in this city.

This painting was part of the “Sidewalk Stories” Exhibition at the Museum of Jersey City History. I wrote about this painting and the inspiration on Nat*s Sidewalk Stories “What Once Was”.

Acrylic Paint, Pastels, Wax Bars, Markers, Spray Paint on 24″ x 36″ canvas

Note: This painting comes framed in a simple wooden floater frame
